Origins of Jazz: The Jazz Piano with Rod Blumenau's Dixieland Five

Event Type: Music & Entertainment
Date: 12/15/2019
Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Time: 4:00 PM
With its 88 black-and-white keys, the piano is a unique and varied instrument. It can play melody, harmony and bass, making it capable of functioning as both an accompanying as well as a lead instrument. And of course, it is a magnificent solo instrument. As jazz piano music developed, the rhythm possibilities improved enormously, making this instrument sound like a full orchestra. Rod Blumenau’s Dixieland Five will demonstrate what Ragtime is, and how it differs from music of the mid-late 19th century; I will play one of James P Johnson’s stride solo piano knuckle busters, either “Carolina Shout” or “Harlem Strut”. The Dixieland Five will also perform such songs as “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” (with description of New Orleans Funeral) and several others.
